{"id":24272,"date":"2025-03-03T20:27:23","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T20:27:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/fulham-condemn-abhorrent-calvin-bassey-racist-and-homophobic-abuse\/"},"modified":"2025-03-03T20:27:23","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T20:27:23","slug":"fulham-condemn-abhorrent-calvin-bassey-racist-and-homophobic-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/fulham-condemn-abhorrent-calvin-bassey-racist-and-homophobic-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Fulham condemn &#8216;abhorrent&#8217; Calvin Bassey racist and homophobic abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Fulham have condemned the &#8220;abhorrent&#8221; racist and homophobic online abuse directed at defender Calvin Bassey following Sunday&#8217;s <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/live\/c3d85nrk9v9t\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">FA Cup penalty shootout win<\/b><\/a><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\"> at Manchester United.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nigeria defender Bassey, who scored the opening goal at Old Trafford, shared some examples of the unsavoury abuse he had received on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour which has no place in football or society,&#8221; Fulham said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a statement, the Premier League said that it is &#8220;appalled by the abuse&#8221; and that it will offer &#8220;our full support to Calvin and the club&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It added: &#8220;We work with social media companies and authorities to help ensure any individuals found guilty of discrimination face the strongest possible consequences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Bassey&#8217;s online abuse follows recent cases involving Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, England defender Kyle Walker, Newcastle United&#8217;s Joe Willock and Manchester City&#8217;s Khadija Shaw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a recent interview with BBC Sport, Samuel Okafor, chief executive of anti-discrimination body Kick It Out (KIO), said the level of abuse in English football had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/articles\/c3rw0v1y4v4o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">&#8220;reached crisis point&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Bassey&#8217;s goal was cancelled out in the second half by Bruno Fernandes, with the game staying level at 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes and extra time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee missed for United in the shootout to send the Cottagers into the quarter-finals, where they will host Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/articles\/cq8y5wl0kw8o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fulham have condemned the &#8220;abhorrent&#8221; racist and homophobic online abuse directed at defender Calvin Bassey following Sunday&#8217;s FA Cup penalty shootout win at Manchester United.
