So for nine seconds, you understand that people pay a lot of attention, and it&#8217;s most interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;For 100m athletes, I can say they&#8217;re very hyper &#8211; hyperactive &#8211; so that&#8217;s why we make the sport interesting.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-10\">Africa ready to rise<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">As Africa&#8217;s fastest man, having run 9.77 seconds in 2021, Omanyala claimed gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham when running 10.02secs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">On the back of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldathletics.org\/records\/toplists\/sprints\/100-metres\/outdoor\/men\/senior\/2023\" class=\"story-body__external-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2.0\">second-fastest 100m time this year<\/span><span class=\"gs-u-ml- gel-icon\" style=\"height:15px;width:15px;\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2.1\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2.1.0\"><title data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2.1.0.0\">external-link<\/title><path d=\"M12 0v5h11.5l-5 5H0v22h22V17.5l-2 2V30H2V12h14.5l-7.8 7.7 3.6 3.6L27 8.5V20h5V0H12z\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2.1.0.1\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.3\"> &#8211; 9.84secs in his home city of Nairobi in May&#8217;s Kip Keino Classic &#8211; Omanyala is now targeting a first 100m podium finish at the World Championships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">The continent has won medals in the men&#8217;s 200m (via Namibia&#8217;s Frankie Fredericks, then Nigerian Francis Obikwelu and South Africans Anaso Jobodwana and Wayde van Niekerk) and in the women&#8217;s 100m (Ivorian duo Murielle Ahoure and Marie-Josee Ta Lou) but not in the men&#8217;s blue riband event. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">&#8220;Africa has never medalled in this race and that&#8217;s something I want to break. I want to change that, so I want to win a medal &#8211; I want to win the gold,&#8221; Omanyala continued. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">&#8220;Going in as one of the top sprinters, people are looking at and counting on you &#8211; people are counting you in that medal bracket. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m going for nothing less than a gold.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$video-18\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$video-18.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$video-18.0.0\"><noscript data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$video-18.0.0.1\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--video\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$video-18.1\">Not only is Ferdinand Omanyala Africa\u2019s fastest man, he is also the inspiration for a new wave sprinters in Kenya.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">The expectation is high for the first Kenyan to take a 100m Diamond League event, with only 400m runner Nicholas Bett having ever won a men&#8217;s Diamond League race for the country before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">Omanyala says another shot at history is not something that will phase him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">&#8220;There&#8217;s always a lot of hype around it, people making predictions here and there, and people posting different types of opinions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">&#8220;That&#8217;s always what brings the tension but the moment you step into the call room and then into the field, it&#8217;s always a different story &#8211; because there&#8217;s no turning back, you&#8217;re alone in this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">&#8220;The moment I get in the field, see the crowd and how the field looks and understand that this now is the reality of it, all my tension always just disappears. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">&#8220;Then when you go on the blocks and onto marks, it&#8217;s either you make history here or you get defeated, and then people will talk either way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">&#8220;You just have to make sure that you run this race and make it the best of your life.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-27\">A race for Africa<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">It is not only a race for Omanyala and Kenya however, as it&#8217;s also a race for Africa. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">Liberia&#8217;s Joseph Fahnbulleh &#8211; who finished fifth in the Olympic 200m final before taking fourth in the same event at last year&#8217;s World Championships &#8211; believes Africa is now ready to challenge the United States&#8217; dominance of the 100m. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">&#8220;For a while, it&#8217;s been the the Americans. Two: getting into that status, where you can run any race in the world and get that recognition you deserve and that we deserve as Africans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35\"><span data-reactid=\".1jf7h6oc62i.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35.0\">&#8220;We go to the Diamond League and they say Americans are not here &#8211; stuff like that.
