The government said <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c30n72j4nrqo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">merging councils<!-- --><\/a> could save \u00a32bn.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">There have been accusations of <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cly5rdy3386o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">democracy being sidelined<!-- --><\/a> over the <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvg80je0re0o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">fast-tracking<!-- --><\/a> of the proposal, which has led to this May&#8217;s local elections being postponed for a year.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The government published its <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/english-devolution-white-paper-power-and-partnership-foundations-for-growth\/english-devolution-white-paper\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">White Paper<!-- --><\/a> outlining the devolution plans in December, which it said would help to drive economic growth and streamline services.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Now it is seeking the views of those who live and work across Norfolk and Suffolk.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Included are questions on the proposed geography, how the combined county authority would make decisions, as well as questions on the effects of working across this geography through a mayoral combined county authority.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Both present county council leaders support the single mayor authority plans.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Earlier this month, Suffolk County Council leader Matthew Hicks said: &#8220;Devolution and council reorganisation will mean we can secure and free up funding to plough directly back into public services that benefit our residents.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But others <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c8xjvz1kz8wo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">are concerned<!-- --><\/a> some services will be &#8220;squeezed&#8221; as planners focus on things like social services. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Norfolk has eight councils at present, while Suffolk has seven. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The district councils are responsible for services such as bin collections, parks and local planning. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Many of them already have combined to share a lot of services, but retain political independence from each other.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The two county councils provide services including waste disposal, road maintenance, schools, libraries and social care.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Under the new proposals, county, borough and district authorities would be replaced by fewer unitary authorities, with representation at the combined mayor-led authority.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The mayoral combined authority consultation closes on 13 April. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A separate consultation on proposals for further local government reorganisation is expected to follow at a later date, possibly September.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cwyg4l201rro\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government has launched a public consultation on plans to replace the current system of local government in Norfolk and Suffolk with a mayor-led authority for both counties.
