A man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences following a stand-off with armed police in Sheffield.<\/p>\n
Officers were called to the Gateway apartment block on Broad Street just after 19:00 GMT on Monday to reports of a man with weapons.<\/p>\n
Residents were evacuated to Ponds Forge sports centre and the city saw widespread travel disruption due to main road closures.<\/p>\n
A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray, criminal damage, possession of a firearm, threats to kill and communicate with a bomb hoax.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “We would like to thank those who have been affected for their continued support while emergency services conduct their work.”<\/p>\n
The apartment building remains closed while officers conduct a thorough search.<\/p>\n
Residents were evacuated due to “increased risk to their safety” and spent two nights away from their homes.<\/p>\n
The force said it was working with them to make sure any pets inside the building were cared for and reunited with their owners.<\/p>\n
Sheffield Parkway, which was closed on Monday, has reopened with public transport resuming as normal.<\/p>\n
