Cardiff City manager Omer Riza believes James Durkin was overawed by his elevation from fourth official to referee as he sent off Callum Robinson against Coventry City.<\/b><\/p>\n
Republic of Ireland forward Robinson was dismissed early in the second half of the 1-1 draw on New Year’s Day after catching Bobby Thomas with his elbow as they jostled for a header.<\/p>\n
Cardiff’s players, coaches and fans were furious with the decision by Durkin, who had started the game as fourth official but had to replace injured referee Geoff Eltringham during the first half.<\/p>\n
Riza said the Bluebirds will be appealing against the red card for Robinson, who is their top scorer this season with eight goals.<\/p>\n
“If anyone thinks that’s a red card then I’m a monkey’s uncle,” said Riza.<\/p>\n
“The arm is up, he has caught him, yellow card, yes. No malice in it at all. All due respect to the referee, it’s his first Championship game.<\/p>\n
“The moment maybe got to him and he wanted to make a big call and it was the wrong one. It’s something we have to deal with.”<\/p>\n
The draw left Cardiff second from bottom of the Championship table, one point adrift of safety.<\/p>\n
A red card for violent conduct would usually carry a three-match suspension, so the Bluebirds will be hoping Robinson’s dismissal will be overturned.<\/p>\n
The former Sheffield United forward had scored three goals in his previous two appearances, including a double during last Sunday’s win over Watford, Cardiff’s first victory in 10 attempts.<\/p>\n
“I spoke to the referees and told them what I told you [media]. I don’t hide anything. I spoke honestly and respectfully,” Riza added.<\/p>\n
“The referee thought he saw it, when he looks back I think he’ll look at it differently. I am hoping that will get overturned. I would like to appeal it.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
