He wears glasses and is wearing a navy suit with a blue shirt and a printed tie.\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\"\/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 fxQYxK\">Getty Images<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">Outgoing Ceann Comhairle Se\u00e1n \u00d3 Feargha\u00edl wants to retain his position as speaker<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Fine Gael leader Simon Harris has also recommended the party&#8217;s TDs support Murphy for the position, Irish broadcaster RT\u00c9 reported. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Fine Gael and Fianna F\u00e1il are in negotiations with the Regional Independent group to become the third leg of the next government.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The group asked both parties to back the nomination of Murphy.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Fianna F\u00e1il&#8217;s \u00d3 Feargha\u00edl told RT\u00c9 that the role should not form part of government formation negotiations.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Speaking on RT\u00c9&#8217;s Radio 1, \u00d3 Feargha\u00edl said Martin told him that he saw the election of Murphy as being critical to the formation of a stable government.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I am not angry, but I am deeply disappointed,&#8221; she said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;We make known fears and concerns of constituents, communicate on their behalf and make known the needs of the people.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She said every member is equal, party or none. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;If elected I will uphold these simply principles,&#8221; she said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Large numbers of people feel alienated in the electorate, removed from everyday life.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;It is incumbent on all of us to change that.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">&#8216;Parties shouldn&#8217;t control the outcome&#8217;<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">John McGuinness from Fianna F\u00e1il said in his nomination statement that he has great respect for the office.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I know there are two sets of opinions here, parties can nominate and suggest to members how to vote and control the outcome,&#8221; he said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I have a different view.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;You achieve best by cooperating with members to achieve an end. Whatever that end may be.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He said in his role as chair of the Public Accounts committee he has seen resolution in tough controversies involving sexual and physical abuse.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;It was achieved by members working together to achieve what was best for the state and the individuals concerned.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Former Ceann Comhairle Sean O Fearghaile who has gone for the nomination again, said he has immense pride over serving as speaker.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He said he worked closely with members of all sides and achieved a lot in his time.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The work we have done shows when we work together we can and we will succeed,&#8221; he said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He added many people asked him to run for the role again for a third time to provide stability to the government.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Aengus \u00d3 Snodaigh from Sinn F\u00e9in said in his nomination speech that there are key skills for the person who will take the seat of Ceann Comhairle and one of which should be an ability to speak as gaelige.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The most senior officer should be proficient in that language,&#8221; he said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The Ceann Comhairle must be an impartial chair and come together in the name of all the people.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;There are people in this room diametrically opposed to what I believe in, but we have worked together on opposite sides in committees or delegations. We are still friends and I have cheekily reached out to the opposite benches to ask for a vote.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">What will happen today?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">On Wednesday morning, Simon Harris formally tendered his resignation to the Irish President as Irish premier, although he will stay on in the role until a new Taoiseach is appointed.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Proceedings in the D\u00e1il got under way at about 10:30 local time.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Clerk of the D\u00e1il, Peter Finnegan, read out the names of all 174 TDs (members of the Irish parliament).<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">TDs will elect a Ceann Comhairle by secret ballot.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The election will be followed by nominations opening for the role of taoiseach, although it is not expected that anyone will be elected today as <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx2wp3e6jkdo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">talks to form a new government<!-- --><\/a> have not been concluded.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">If the role isn&#8217;t filled, the D\u00e1il will be suspended and a date set in the new year for members to reconvene.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/crrw22z8rrxo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getty Images The 34th D\u00e1il is to meet on Wednesday for the first time since the elections in November Politicians in the Republic of Ireland are meeting for the first time since the general election.
