{"id":18050,"date":"2024-11-29T08:10:01","date_gmt":"2024-11-29T08:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/government-to-review-second-miners-pension-scheme\/"},"modified":"2024-11-29T08:10:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T08:10:01","slug":"government-to-review-second-miners-pension-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/government-to-review-second-miners-pension-scheme\/","title":{"rendered":"Government to review second miners pension scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Tens of thousands more former mineworkers could be set to benefit after the government announced it would review a controversial pension scheme.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The chancellor used last month\u2019s <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c2e7gl9glkgo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Budget to scrap a 30-year old arrangement<!-- --><\/a> that saw the government receive hundreds of millions of pounds a year from the Mineworkers Pension Scheme (MPS).<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The first instalment of the \u00a31.5bn Rachel Reeves pledged to pay back will be made on Friday. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The government has now confirmed it will look at a second miners&#8217; pension after former pit managers in the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (BCSSS) challenged their exclusion from the new payments.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Earlier this month, Dave Cradduck, who spent 20 years working at Haig Pit in Whitehaven, Cumbria, told the BBC it was &#8220;unjust&#8221; that &#8220;not a penny&#8221; would be given back to those on the BCSSS.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He said the government had taken \u00a34.8bn out of the MPS fund, and \u00a33.2bn out of BCSSS, so therefore those on that scheme were also owed money.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At the time, a spokesperson for the Department for Energy gave no indication that any future changes would take place and said the government \u201cmust consider the two schemes separately&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But the department has now announced it would \u201creview any proposals set out by the Trustees of the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Last week, the trustees asked ministers to hand back the \u00a32.3bn investment reserve to members of the scheme.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Both schemes were taken over by the government when British Coal was privatised in 1994.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The agreements were struck between the then-Conservative government and the scheme&#8217;s trustees, in exchange for a government guarantee that the value of mineworkers&#8217; pensions would not decrease.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The recent reversal of the MPS arrangement will see 112,000 former miners\u2019 pensions increased by a third.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said it \u201cmarks an end to a decades-long injustice that has denied thousands across the country the decent pension that they so undeniably deserve\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c3wqg9e08qjo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tens of thousands more former mineworkers could be set to benefit after the government announced it would review a controversial pension scheme.
