{"id":17435,"date":"2024-11-20T02:24:21","date_gmt":"2024-11-20T02:24:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/keir-starmer-says-he-has-no-plans-to-join-bluesky-yet\/"},"modified":"2024-11-20T02:24:21","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T02:24:21","slug":"keir-starmer-says-he-has-no-plans-to-join-bluesky-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/keir-starmer-says-he-has-no-plans-to-join-bluesky-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"Keir Starmer says he has no plans to join Bluesky yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Sir Keir Starmer has said he has &#8220;no plans&#8221; to join the Bluesky social media platform.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">There has been a rising wave of popularity for the app &#8211; an alternative to Elon Musk&#8217;s X &#8211; in recent weeks.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Bluesky has at times been the most downloaded app on both the US and UK Apple Stores, with many social media users leaving X in the wake of the US election.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But the prime minister told reporters that &#8220;at the moment&#8221; there are no plans to establish official UK government accounts or a personal one in his name.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Some politicians have already set up Bluesky accounts including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and treasury minister Darren Jones.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Speaking at the G20 summit in Brazil, Sir Keir said it is &#8220;important for a government&#8221; to be able to communicate with &#8220;as many people as possible&#8221;, adding &#8220;we&#8217;re obviously still using Twitter (X)&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">X does not share its total user numbers but it is understood to be measured in the hundreds of millions.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Bluesky was started by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey in 2019. The platform announced this week it had surpassed 19 million users.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Despite helping fund and start it, Mr Dorsey is no longer part of the team behind the social network.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The key difference between Bluesky and most other social media platforms is that it is decentralised, meaning it is operated on independent servers and not those owned by the company.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It describes itself as &#8220;social media as it should be&#8221; &#8211; a place where people can come together over shared interests &#8220;and have some fun again&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Many new users have said their decision to join Bluesky was driven by Elon Musk, who heavily backed Donald Trump&#8217;s election campaign and intends to remain involved in the new administration.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Last week, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvg48m5j4zjo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">the Guardian announced it will no longer post on X<!-- --><\/a>, saying the US election underlined its concerns that Musk had been able to use X to &#8220;shape political discourse&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cwy12ny01e1o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sir Keir Starmer has said he has &#8220;no plans&#8221; to join the Bluesky social media platform.
