They do not look cuddly,\u201d said Melissa Michelson, a political scientist at Menlo College.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Video of Spot strutting around the property has gone viral on TikTok &#8211; where reactions range from calling them cool and cute, to creepy &#8211; and become fodder<!-- --> for jokes on American late night television. But its mission is no laughing matter.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cSafeguarding the president-elect is a top priority,\u201d said Anthony Guglielmi, US Secret Service chief of communications, in a statement to the BBC.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In the months leading up to the US presidential election, Trump was the target of two apparent assassination attempts. The first took place at a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania and the other occurred at the Mar-a-Lago golf course in September.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Citing \u201cconcern for operational security,\u201d the Secret Service declined to answer the BBC\u2019s specific questions about the use of robotic dogs in Trump\u2019s security detail, including when the agency began deploying the device at his primary residence.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Boston Dynamics also declined to answer specific questions, although it confirmed the Secret Service was deploying its Spot robot.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">So why might the Secret Service be using them now?<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ron Williams, a former Secret Service agent who is now CEO of the security and risk management firm Talon Companies, suspects the assassination attempts against Trump added urgency to the agency\u2019s push \u201cto upgrade the technology that can enhance the ability to detect and deter,\u201d Williams said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At Mar-a-Lago, where so much of the property is exposed, Williams said robotic dogs are long overdue. \u201cThey can cover a lot more area\u201d than humans alone, Williams said of the dogs, which he expects will become more of a common sight over time.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And it\u2019s not just the Secret Service. Williams said robotic dogs have increasingly become a tool used by militaries and law enforcement agencies around the world.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A bomb squad in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania that <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bostondynamics.com\/case-studies\/spot-joins-montgomery-county-pa-sheriffs-bomb-squad\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">purchased Spot in the spring<!-- --><\/a> deploys the device to inspect potential explosives, according to Boston Dynamics promotional materials.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Last year, the New York Police Department moved forward with <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/nypd-spot-boston-dynamics-robot-dog\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">adding the robotic canines to its force<!-- --><\/a> despite complaints of \u201ca dystopian overreach of police power,\u201d according to<!-- --> Wired.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">On the other side of the globe, <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/post\/38721\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine has used them to conduct reconnaissance<!-- --><\/a> in the ongoing conflict sparked by Russia\u2019s invasion in 2022, the Kyiv Post reports.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">See Spot run<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Spot is known for its agility. It can walk up and down stairs and navigate tight spaces. It can even open doors.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But its ability to reveal potential threats ranks high among the reasons that so many agencies appear willing to pay up to $75,000 (\u00a359,000) for the device.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Secret Service communications chief Guglielmi said the robotic dogs were \u201cequipped with surveillance technology, and an array of advanced sensors that support our protective operations\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The device comes outfitted with multiple cameras that generate a 3D map of its surroundings, according to Boston Dynamics marketing materials, and can also have extras such as thermal sensing.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But none of this happens without a human master.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cThey basically have a joystick controlling the robot dog as it walks around,\u201d said Missy Cummings, an engineering professor at George Mason University who runs the university\u2019s Autonomy and Robotics Center. Spot can also move automatically along predefined routes.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Unlike their human and real canine counterparts, robotic dogs aren\u2019t distracted by visuals, sounds or smells they encounter.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But despite their many impressive features, the devices can be taken down.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cYou just have to spray it with Aqua Net hairspray in its \u2018face\u2019,\u201d Cummings said. \u201cAnd that would be enough to stop the cameras from working correctly.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">While the robotic dog seen at Mar-a-Lago is not armed, she says competitors appear to be experimenting with models that are.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cPeople are trying to weaponise these dogs,\u201d Cummings adds, citing a Chinese model with an attached rifle which she learned about at a robotics meeting this week.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">They aren\u2019t about to replace humans, says Melissa Michelson, who likens the devices to assisted-driving technology in some vehicles.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have a lot of faith in the ability of cars to drive by themselves,\u201d Michelson said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Secret Service agents at Mar-a-Lago have been seen patrolling alongside Spot.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cWe still do need those humans behind the scenes to use human judgment and be able to jump in if there\u2019s a technology breakdown,\u201d she says.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c30p16gn3pvo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reuters A Secret Service robot dog patrols US President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s Mar-a-Lago residence A robotic dog named \u201cSpot\u201d made by Boston Dynamics is the latest tool in the arsenal of the US Secret Service.
