I think the Royal Family are part of the Australian culture. He\u2019s going through chemo and he didn\u2019t need this. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I surely appreciate him visiting here. It may be the last time he comes. Heaps of people share my thoughts.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Buckingham Palace has made no official comment on Thorpe&#8217;s protest, instead focussing on the crowds who had turned up to see the King and Queen in Canberra.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A palace source said that the royal couple were deeply touched by the many thousands who had turned out to support them.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer praised the King&#8217;s work during his Australia tour, particularly given the monarch\u2019s recent health challenges.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">When asked by reporters if it was &#8220;disgraceful&#8221; for Australian politicians to heckle the King, Starmer replied: &#8220;Look, I think the King is doing a fantastic job, an incredible ambassador, not just for our country, but across the Commonwealth.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">King Charles&#8217;s visit &#8211; in a year in which he has been receiving cancer treatment &#8211; is his first to Australia since succeeding his mother Queen Elizabeth II. In 1999 the question was put to the public in a referendum \u2013 which is the only way to change the nation\u2019s constitution \u2013 and resoundingly defeated.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Polls suggest support for the movement has grown since then, and the country\u2019s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who shook the King&#8217;s hand just before the senator&#8217;s intervention, is a long-term republican.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However, Albanese&#8217;s government has ruled out holding a second vote on the issue anytime soon, following the unsuccessful referendum on Indigenous recognition last year.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A lighter moment came earlier in the day when the King petted an alpaca who was wearing a small crown, when he stopped to talk to members of the public after a visit to Canberra&#8217;s war memorial.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The royal couple also planted trees at Government House before the King, a long-term environmentalist, visited the National Bushfire Behaviour Research Laboratory.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\"
