Her campaign is entitled Renewal 2030 &#8211; which she says will be her first year as Conservative prime minister.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A source from Jenrick&#8217;s team said party members faced a choice between a candidate with detailed policies to fix the NHS, the economy and migration, or \u201crisking being drawn into endless&#8221; spats and distractions.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In his conference speech, 42-year-old Jenrick laid out five key changes for the party to challenge Labour: an immigration cap, opposing Labour\u2019s \u201cmad plans\u201d on net zero, embracing housebuilding, reducing the size of the state and \u201cdefending our culture\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Personal style<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Badenoch is known for her direct approach and willingness to speak her mind.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At the Conservative Party conference, there was controversy over her <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cg56zlge8g5o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">suggestion that maternity pay had &#8220;gone too far&#8221;<!-- --><\/a>. She later said she had been &#8220;misrepresented&#8221;, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cm24vzd52p4o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">but the criticism drowned out her campaign<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But Badenoch&#8217;s pugnacious approach to debate means she &#8220;has cut through to the public,&#8221; says supporter and conservative commentator Albie Amankona.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">People see she is &#8220;fiery, opinionated, brave and competent,&#8221; without the need to be attention grabbing, he adds.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Her allies see hints of Margaret Thatcher in her take-no-prisoners style. (top row left to right) Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick and Mel Stride, (bottom row left to right)&#10;James Cleverly, Tom Tugendhat and Dame Priti Patel.\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">Of the six candidates for Tory leader, only Badenoch and Jenrick remain, after Tory MPs voted out Mel Stride, James Cleverly, Tom Tugendhat and Dame Priti Patel.<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Cultural issues<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Sometimes labelled a &#8220;culture warrior&#8221; &#8211; a tag she disputes &#8211; Badenoch is popular with many on the right of the party for her &#8220;anti-woke&#8221; stance.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">As equalities minster, she gained attention by rejecting claims of widespread institutional racism in the UK and fighting to preserve single-sex spaces for women over gender-neutral toilets.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At the party conference, Badenoch told the <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cg56zlge8g5o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show &#8220;not all cultures are equally valid&#8221;<!-- --><\/a> when it comes to deciding who should be allowed into the UK.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Jenrick has in the past stayed away from these hot-button topics, reportedly warning young activists in his party not to &#8220;go down a rabbit hole of culture wars&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But in his conference speech, he vowed to &#8220;take a stand to protect our nation, culture, identity and way of life&#8221; which he said were at risk due to mass migration and a lack of integration.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Backgrounds<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Both candidates have served in the cabinet, but their journey there could not have been more different.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Born in south London, to parents of Nigerian origin, Badenoch grew up in the US and Nigeria, where her psychology professor mother had lecturing jobs.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Her exposure to instability in Nigeria &#8220;a place where fear was everywhere&#8221; forged her conservative appreciation for &#8220;security, democracy, equality under the law and above all else freedom,&#8221; Badenoch said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She is married to Hamish Badenoch, a banker and former Conservative councillor  &#8211; they have two daughters and a son.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At the Tory conference in Birmingham, Jenrick described himself as \u201ca Midlands man\u201d &#8211; having been raised in Shropshire while attending a private school, Wolverhampton Grammar.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">After working as a corporate lawyer in London and Moscow, he moved into business, becoming an international managing director at auction house Christie&#8217;s before becoming an MP at the age of 32.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He is married to US corporate lawyer Michal Berkner, the grandchild of Holocaust survivors.
