There are trees visible behind him, and he is wearing a dark grey hooded sweatshirt and looking straight at the camera. \" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\"\/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 fxQYxK\">Supplied<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">Tim Chan says that without the tool, he wouldn&#8217;t be able to live his life to the fullest<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">For Tim Chan, who is unable to speak, facilitated communication is \u201ca lifeline\u201d that allows him to do things he once thought impossible, such as socialising, or studying for his PhD.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI was presumed incompetent, and ignored or dismissed,\u201d the 29-year-old, who was diagnosed with autism as a toddler, says using a text-to-voice tool in his home in Melbourne.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Facilitated communication involves someone guiding the hand, arm or back of a non-verbal person, so that they can point to letters or words on a bespoke keyboard.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Chan\u2019s facilitator is his mother Sarah, and, over the past 20 years, her support has \u201cfaded\u201d to a slight touch of his shoulder, which he says keeps him \u201cfocused\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Advocates insist it is a miracle tool, one which gives disabled people a voice.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But a growing chorus of experts, families and even former facilitators want it banned, due to research indicating that the likely author of the messages is the facilitator, not the communicator. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">They cite a string of criminal allegations made by non-verbal people using the method which have been dismissed by the courts and investigators.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The debate has sparked allegations of ableism, ruined legacies, inspired a new Louis Theroux documentary, and an international conversation about the power dynamics between disabled people and those who care for them.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">A misguided invention<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Facilitated communication was created in 1977 by Australian disability advocate Rosemary Crossley, who died last year and left a complex legacy.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">To those who knew her, she\u2019s remembered as champion for \u201cpeople with little or no functional speech\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But others say her communications invention &#8211; and her formidable defence of it &#8211; were misguided and harmful. The picture appears to be professionally taken and they are in a back garden.\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\"\/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 fxQYxK\">Getty Images<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">Rosemary Crossley invented facilitated communication in the 1970s, and Anne McDonald was the first person to use it<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Within weeks McDonald was spelling out whole sentences and doing fractions, despite having no formal education and being institutionalised since age three.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Some of Crossley\u2019s colleagues expressed surprise that McDonald, who\u2019d never read, could suddenly write eloquent prose, and cite literary references, when her arm was held by the highly educated Crossley.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">One who raised questions was the institution\u2019s head paediatrician and psychiatrist Dr Dennis Maginn, who wouldn\u2019t validate Crossley\u2019s communication theory without independent testing.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">McDonald later accused him, facilitated by Crossley\u2019s supported typing, of attempting to smother her to death with a pillow. Homicide investigators dismissed the claims, but his career never recovered.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cMy thoughtful, introspective and well-intentioned father went through living hell,\u201d his son, lawyer Paul Maginn, says, adding that \u201cany right-thinking person\u201d could see the allegation had been made up by Crossley.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Crossley even had her own initial doubts about the technique, writing at the time: \u201cWhat I did not know was whether I was subconsciously manipulating [Anne] or imagining her hand movements.\u2019\u2019<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">McDonald &#8211; who ended up leaving the institution and living with Crossley &#8211; went on to use the method with other facilitators. She also earned a humanities degree and co-authored the book Annie\u2019s Coming Out, which was turned into an award-winning film.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But despite all these achievements, McDonald\u2019s mother Beverley \u201cnever believed\u201d that her daughter could communicate: \u201cI asked her questions and got nowhere,\u201d she told the ABC in 2012, after her daughter died.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Science v advocacy<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">For Marlena Katene, facilitated communication has allowed her to \u201cconnect and say whatever I want\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The 33-year-old Gold Coast native selects words using a keyboard. Facilitated communication testimony from the man was ruled unreliable under New Jersey\u2019s test for scientific evidence.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Two years later, an appeals court overturned Stubblefield\u2019s conviction, ordering a retrial on the basis that it was a violation of her rights to not allow her to use facilitated communication as a defence. In 2018 she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was sentenced to time served.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She maintains the relationship was consensual and that the two were \u201cintellectual equals in love\u201d. Prof Shane\u2019s controlled testing concluded that the man had the intellectual ability of a six-month-old.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Testifying in Stubblefield\u2019s case James Todd, a psychology professor at Eastern Michigan University, argued that the university where Stubblefield received her training held some responsibility for the crime. He said Syracuse University was \u201cchampioning facilitated communication over clear and established science,\u201d and implored it to \u201crenounce and repudiate\u201d the technique for its \u201cdangerous harms.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Syracuse University, one of the only universities with a facilitated communication institute, did not respond to repeated requests for comment.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">\u2018More harm than good\u2019<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The BBC approached five different academic experts on facilitated communication worldwide to speak about the technique. All declined.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At least 30 medical associations worldwide oppose facilitated communication. Many, such as the UK\u2019s National Autistic Society, warn that it\u2019s \u201cineffective\u201d and able to cause \u201csignificant harm.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Other opponents include the UK\u2019s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, The American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Paediatrics and Speech Pathology Australia.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">These organisations cite peer-reviewed evidence indicating the technique is discredited pseudoscience and have flagged the risks it poses to disabled people, their families, and facilitators themselves, because of potential false allegations.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Clinical psychologist Adrienne Perry has warned the non-verbal person \u201cis made a &#8216;screen&#8217; for a facilitator&#8217;s hostilities, hopes, beliefs or suspicions\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">For speech trainer Janyce Boynto &#8211; who did her facilitated communication training at the University of Maine &#8211; the discovery was shocking.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She\u2019d been facilitating the communication of a 16-year-old non-verbal autistic girl, who\u2019d accused her father and brother of sexual abuse via Ms Boynton\u2019s facilitation. Prof Shane was called in to do a double-blind test with pictures.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cIt turned out, even though I believed in facilitated communication, I was the author of all the answers,\u201d Ms Boynton tells the BBC. \u201cIt was irrefutable. They process information differently,\u201d Ms Chan says. \u201cIt\u2019s possible there\u2019s some unconscious cueing going on.
