{"id":12697,"date":"2024-09-28T03:26:49","date_gmt":"2024-09-28T03:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/microsoft-to-re-launch-privacy-nightmare-ai-screenshot-tool\/"},"modified":"2024-09-28T03:26:49","modified_gmt":"2024-09-28T03:26:49","slug":"microsoft-to-re-launch-privacy-nightmare-ai-screenshot-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/microsoft-to-re-launch-privacy-nightmare-ai-screenshot-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft to re-launch \u2018privacy nightmare\u2019 AI screenshot tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Microsoft says it has \u201clistened to feedback\u201d following a privacy row over a new tool which takes regular screenshots of users\u2019 activity.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It was labelled a potential \u201cprivacy nightmare\u201d by critics <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cpwwqp6nx14o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">when it was unveiled in May 2024<!-- --><\/a> &#8211; prompting the tech giant to postpone its release.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It now plans to relaunch the artificial intelligence (AI) powered tool in November on its new CoPilot+ computers.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Some of its more controversial features have been stripped out &#8211; for example, it will be opt-in whereas the original version was turned on by default.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The controversy over Recall had led the Information Commissioner&#8217;s Office (ICO), the UK\u2019s data watchdog, to \u201cmake enquiries\u201d with the tech giant about the tool. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It said it had now been informed that a &#8220;series of changes&#8221; had been made to the product.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;We will be continuing to assess Recall as Microsoft moves toward launch&#8221;, it said in a statement.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">When it initially announced the tool at its developer conference in May, Microsoft said it used AI &#8220;to make it possible to access virtually anything you have ever seen on your PC&#8221;, and likened it to having photographic memory.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It said Recall could search through a users&#8217; past activity, including their files, photos, emails and browsing history.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It was designed to help people find things they had looked at or worked on previously by searching through desktop screenshots taken every few seconds.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But critics quickly raised concerns, given the quantity of sensitive data the system would harvest, with one expert labelling it a potential \u201cprivacy nightmare.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Recall was never made publicly available.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A version of the tool was set to be rolled out with CoPilot+ computers &#8211; which Microsoft billed as the fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever built &#8211; when they launched in June, after Microsoft <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cd11rje1mrro\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">told users it had made changes to make it more secure.<!-- --><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But its launch was delayed further and has now been pushed back to the autumn. The company has also announced extra security measures for it.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cRecall is an opt-in experience. Snapshots and any associated information are always encrypted,&#8221; said Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft&#8217;s corporate vice president of Windows and devices.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He added that &#8220;Windows offers tools to help you control your privacy and customise what gets saved for you to find later&#8221;. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However a technical blog about it states that \u201cdiagnostic data\u201d from the tool may be shared with the firm depending on individual privacy settings.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The firm added that screenshots can only be accessed with a biometric login, and sensitive information such as credit card details will not be snapped by default.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Recall is only available on the CoPilot+ range of bespoke laptops featuring powerful inbuilt AI chips.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Professor Alan Woodward, a cybersecurity expert at Surrey University, said the new measures were a significant improvement.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cBefore any functionality like Recall is deployed the security and privacy aspects will need to be comprehensively tested,\u201d he said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However he added he would not be rushing to use it.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cPersonally I would not opt-in until this has been tested in the wild for some time.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c869glx8endo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft says it has \u201clistened to feedback\u201d following a privacy row over a new tool which takes regular screenshots of users\u2019 activity.
