{"id":12358,"date":"2024-09-24T23:29:49","date_gmt":"2024-09-24T23:29:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/reeves-sets-optimistic-tone-but-stresses-tough-choices-too\/"},"modified":"2024-09-24T23:29:49","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T23:29:49","slug":"reeves-sets-optimistic-tone-but-stresses-tough-choices-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/reeves-sets-optimistic-tone-but-stresses-tough-choices-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Reeves sets optimistic tone but stresses tough choices too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">There was one line recurring again and again in the chancellor\u2019s speech to Labour conference: \u201cThat\u2019s the Britain we\u2019re building.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">This is clearly a feature of Rachel Reeves\u2019s determination to demonstrate more optimism &#8211; not just the tough choices to come, but the rewards she believes will come from having made them.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The phrase may also be an allusion to Labour\u2019s determination to increase housebuilding, perhaps the biggest component of the government\u2019s plans to increase economic growth.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">I think it is also a conscious echo of the <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk_politics\/8281399.stm\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">last speech delivered by a prime minister to a Labour conference<!-- --><\/a> &#8211; Gordon Brown in 2009.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In that speech, Brown reeled off a list of what he saw as the New Labour governments\u2019 achievements, concluding to a raucous ovation: \u201cThat\u2019s the Britain we\u2019ve been building together\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Clips of the speech are often shared on social media by Labour politicians and activists &#8211; Reeves is subtly signalling to them that she hopes to build a similar record in government.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The most controversial decision Reeves has made in her 80 days as chancellor is <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx02zdd92zdo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">withdrawing the winter fuel allowance from most pensioners<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The chancellor tackled that head on, arguing that pensioners would still benefit from a rising state pension because of Labour\u2019s commitment to the triple-lock.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Interestingly, she made an argument in this section which was not really about the winter fuel allowance itself, but about the necessity of making controversial decisions overall. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI know that not everyone in this hall or in the country will agree with every decision that I make.
