{"id":12013,"date":"2024-09-21T15:52:59","date_gmt":"2024-09-21T15:52:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/gonzalez-forced-to-accept-maduro-election-win\/"},"modified":"2024-09-21T15:53:00","modified_gmt":"2024-09-21T15:53:00","slug":"gonzalez-forced-to-accept-maduro-election-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/gonzalez-forced-to-accept-maduro-election-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Gonz\u00e1lez &#8216;forced&#8217; to accept Maduro election win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez has said he was &#8220;forced&#8221; to recognise President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro as the winner of July&#8217;s disputed election before being allowed to seek asylum in Spain.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In a video message, Gonz\u00e1lez said Maduro&#8217;s aides had coerced<!-- --><b id=\"\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\"> <!-- --><\/b>him into signing a letter while he was hiding in the Spanish embassy in Venezuela&#8217;s capital Caracas earlier this month. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But Jorge Rodr\u00edguez, the head of Venezuela&#8217;s National Assembly and a key Maduro ally, said Gonz\u00e1lez had willingly written his signature.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Electoral authorities loyal to Maduro announced him the victor in the election &#8211; something which was disputed by Gonz\u00e1lez, and many sections of the international community.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In Wednesday&#8217;s video message from Madrid on X, Gonz\u00e1lez, 75, said Maduro&#8217;s aides had brought him the letter, claiming that &#8220;I had to either sign it or deal with the consequences&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;There were very tense hours of coercion, blackmail and pressure.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;At that point I considered I could be of more use free than if I were imprisoned,&#8221; Gonz\u00e1lez said, describing the signed letter as &#8220;worthless&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Gonz\u00e1lez, who has now been granted asylum in Spain, referred to himself as the &#8220;president-elect of millions and millions of Venezuelans who voted for change, democracy and peace&#8221;, vowing to &#8220;fulfil that mandate&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Following Gonzalez&#8217;s statement, Maduro ally Rodr\u00edguez presented the letter, which he said was signed by Gonz\u00e1lez of his own volition.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At a press conference in Caracas on Wednesday, he also gave Gonz\u00e1lez &#8220;24 hours&#8221; to take back his assertions, saying that otherwise he would publish audio of their conversations debunking the opposition candidate&#8217;s claims.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cIf you signed under pressure how is it that one of your daughters still lives in Venezuela peacefully, with her family, as regular Venezuelans?<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Venezuelans can think in one way or another and all of them have a place in the territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Here there&#8217;s no place for violence or fascism,&#8221; Rodr\u00edguez said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He also showed photos of an alleged meeting between himself, Vice-President Delcy Rodr\u00edguez and Gonz\u00e1lez at the Spanish embassy in Caracas on the eve of the opposition candidate&#8217;s departure earlier this month.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Prior to his departure for Spain, a Venezuelan judge had issued an arrest warrant for Gonz\u00e1lez, accusing him of conspiracy and of forging documents, among other &#8220;serious crimes&#8221; &#8211; all things Gonzalez denied.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Venezuela&#8217;s National Electoral Council (CNE) claims Maduro, 61, won 52% of the vote in the 28 July elections.
