{"id":11954,"date":"2024-09-20T21:48:17","date_gmt":"2024-09-20T21:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/how-much-tax-money-does-the-uk-government-raise-and-spend\/"},"modified":"2024-09-20T21:48:17","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T21:48:17","slug":"how-much-tax-money-does-the-uk-government-raise-and-spend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/how-much-tax-money-does-the-uk-government-raise-and-spend\/","title":{"rendered":"How much tax money does the UK government raise and spend?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Social protection <\/b>spending is by far the biggest outgoing for the government, accounting for more than a quarter of all its expenditure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This includes the cost of <b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">benefits <\/b>paid to pensioners as well those for working-age people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Before the general election was announced, the OBR predicted spending on social protection would rise to \u00a3371bn in 2024-25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In July, the government said it would restrict the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4gv632d05lo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Winter Fuel Payment<\/a> to pensioners receiving means-tested benefits, which it hopes will save around \u00a31.5bn a year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-53082530\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">the new full state pension is set to rise by \u00a3460 a year from April 2025<\/a>, under the &#8220;triple lock&#8221; arrangement, which guarantees that it keeps pace with earnings and inflation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">About a fifth of government spending goes on<b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\"> health. <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Health spending has been rising for decades, because of the growing cost of looking after the UK&#8217;s ageing population, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/News\/Latest-news-from-LSE\/2023\/f-June-2023\/Costs-of-new-drugs-threaten-financial-sustainability-of-NHS#:~:text=New%20figures%20show%20that%20the,and%20the%20University%20of%20York.\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">increased spending on treatments<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a>.
