{"id":11281,"date":"2024-09-14T20:29:39","date_gmt":"2024-09-14T20:29:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/off-gridders-take-energy-needs-into-their-own-hands\/"},"modified":"2024-09-14T20:29:39","modified_gmt":"2024-09-14T20:29:39","slug":"off-gridders-take-energy-needs-into-their-own-hands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/off-gridders-take-energy-needs-into-their-own-hands\/","title":{"rendered":"Off-gridders take energy needs into their own hands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">You might think that this approach is only suited to a handful of mavericks who dream of living by themselves in the forest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But climate change is making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-59105963\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">extreme weather events more commonplace<\/a> and prompting many people to reconsider the security of supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">With the cost of energy soaring in many parts of the world, thanks in part to the war in Ukraine, it&#8217;s possible that more people will consider installing solar panels and battery systems to lower their costs &#8211; or even go off-grid entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Institutions and communities are already installing miniature power grids that can keep going after severe weather or other disasters have interrupted the main supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It&#8217;s called &#8220;islanding&#8221; or &#8220;island mode&#8221;. When an extreme winter storm hit Texas in February 2021, the University of Texas at Austin relied on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/articles\/university-texas-austin-finds-sustainable-solutions-through-peer\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">its own energy sources and microgrid<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> to avoid losing power, despite widespread blackouts nearby. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">What if your local school could do this too? Or even your own house?<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I think we are inching our way to the point where every neighbourhood could have a microgrid,&#8221; says Katherine Hammack, director of special projects at Green Business Certification Inc. &#8220;Climate change is driving people to look at alternate solutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is increasingly common in the US. Take the town of Fairfield in Connecticut, for instance. After Hurricane Irene in 2011, officials began looking for ways of ensuring that some essential services could continue to function in the event of a similar disaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">If the main grid fails, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2es.org\/content\/microgrids-improve-resilience-efficiency\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">the town now has a microgrid system<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a>, including a gas generator and solar panels, which can provide power to the police and fire headquarters, a homeless shelter, emergency communications centre and a mobile phone mast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-62351448?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=KARANGA\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You might think that this approach is only suited to a handful of mavericks who dream of living by themselves in the forest.
