Surrey will still fancy their chances of securing an eighth win of the season on the final day which would put them within just a few points of third title in a row – but Somerset will look to Jack Leach and Vaughan on a pitch helping the spinners.<\/p>\n
Vaughan is the son of former England captain Michael and playing in only his second first-class match – one that second-placed Somerset cannot afford to lose, having begun 24 points behind their opponents.<\/p>\n
He bowled in tandem with fellow spinner Leach, a member of the England squad for the tour to Pakistan, as the pair got through more than 85 overs.<\/p>\n
Foakes, who lost his England Test place to Surrey team-mate Jamie Smith, was caught at short leg for 37.<\/p>\n
Vaughan then had Clark taken at mid-wicket by Tom Abell and Steel caught behind in the space of three deliveries.<\/p>\n
Left-armer Leach did claim the vital wickets of Rishi Patel (70) and Al Hasan (12) before Tom Curran counter-attacked reaching 50 off 33 balls.<\/p>\n
Leach ended the innings on the stroke of lunch when Curran was caught at long-on for 86 off 75 balls, including eight sixes, Leach finishing with 4-105.<\/p>\n
Surrey soon removed the Somerset openers and as in the first innings, it was Bangladesh’s Shakib – signed by Surrey for this game – who proved the main spin threat.<\/p>\n
He also sent back Tom Abell, James Rew and Lewis Gregory for figures of 4-83, But Leach and Overton added 31 for the ninth wicket before the former was caught behind off Curran.<\/p>\n
Banton had injured his ankle during the warm-up before play began, and will have a scan following the game – potentially bad news for Somerset ahead of Saturday’s T20 Blast Finals Day – but he hit four fours in a stand of 41 as he and Overton saw it through to the close. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
