{"id":10048,"date":"2024-09-04T16:10:48","date_gmt":"2024-09-04T16:10:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/heritage-steam-railway-extension-plans-approved\/"},"modified":"2024-09-04T16:10:48","modified_gmt":"2024-09-04T16:10:48","slug":"heritage-steam-railway-extension-plans-approved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/heritage-steam-railway-extension-plans-approved\/","title":{"rendered":"Heritage steam railway extension plans approved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A heritage steam railway in a north Wales national park hopes to double visitor numbers after plans to extend the line were approved.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Eryri national park &#8211; also known as Snowdonia &#8211; gave the go ahead for the Bala Lake Railway to run to the centre of Bala, Gwynedd.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The scheme includes a new terminus building and will see an estimated rise in passengers, from 34,000 in 2023 to 60,000.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Director of planning, Jonathan Cawley, told the national park&#8217;s planning committee on Wednesday: \u201cThe development would bring a new tourist attraction to the area that would be of benefit to the surrounding areas and to the town of Bala.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Bala Lake Railway Trust embarked on a fundraising mission spanning several years, to raise \u00a34m to build three-quarters of a mile (1.2km) of new track and a new station in the town centre.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At present narrow gauge trains run four-and-a-half miles (7.2km) from Llanuwchllyn along the shore of Llyn Tegid to the outskirts of Bala.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The original <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-65324522\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">proposal was rejected<!-- --><\/a> in April 2023 due to concerns over the impact on phosphate levels in nearby waterways due to more visitors.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But Welsh Water told members the increase could be accommodated under the latest assessment plan.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Trust also claims the development will ease parking issues along the B4403.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Members unanimously passed the scheme but recommended work does not start until improvements to the Bala water treatment works, scheduled for March 2025, have been completed.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c0jpy6yzl6zo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A heritage steam railway in a north Wales national park hopes to double visitor numbers after plans to extend the line were approved.
