Tafwyl features a variety of artists and musicians and celebrates the Welsh language

Tafwyl returns to Cardiff on 13-14 July, with a variety of artists and musicians celebrating the Welsh language.

The annual Welsh culture festival brings creatives together from across the country, with Welsh performers taking centre stage throughout this free two-day festival.

Welsh acts will headline the main stage at Tafwyl on Saturday and Sunday, 13 and 14 July, with performances from Eden, Fleur De Lys, Al Lewis, and more.

“Tafwyl was set up to celebrate Welsh music, language and culture within the capital city and offer a platform for Welsh language performers from all over Cymru,” said Tafwyl chief officer Bethan Jones-Ollerton.

There’s live music and events across three stages, as well as a sports area, kids village, and even live cooking demonstrations.

You’ll find lots of local food and drink, too, including pints of the specially-brewed, festival-exclusive Cwrw Tafwyl beer.

Where is Tafwyl and what time does it start?

Tafwyl is being held in Cardiff’s Bute Park this year, spread out across Cooper’s Field and the Sunken Lawn

Tafwyl is being held in Bute Park this year, spread out across Cooper’s Field and the Sunken Lawn, with various stages and tents throughout.

“Tafwyl was established 18 years ago in 2006 in the Mochyn Du pub car park with around 1,000 attendees,” said Ms Jones-Ollerton.

“It quickly outgrew the car park and moved to Cardiff Castle in 2012, and then last year moved to its new home in Bute Park as it outgrew the castle.”

The main festival weekend starts at 11:30 BST on Saturday, 13 July, and comes to a close at around 22:00 on Sunday, 14 July.

Tafwyl’s festival map can help attendees find their way around.

How much does it cost to go to Tafwyl?

Entry to Tafwyl is free all weekend – there are no tickets, either, so people can turn up at Bute Park on the day.

Who’s performing at Tafwyl 2024?

There are multiple stages with a variety of different artists performing across the weekend

Tafwyl has a packed schedule full of local artists and performers who will be taking the spotlight across several stages.

Highlights from the main stage include (times all BST):

  • Fleur De Lys: Saturday, 19:40 – 20:30
  • Mellt: Saturday, 17:10 – 18:00
  • Yws Gwynedd: Saturday, 21:00 – 22:00
  • HMS Morris: Sunday, 17:20 – 18:00
  • Gwilym: Sunday, 19:40-20:30
  • Eden: Sunday, 21:00 – 22:00

Elsewhere, you’ll find an evening of Unhinged Techno at the Tafilwn stage on Saturday from 21:25, with Al Lewis taking to the stage on Sunday at 20:05.

Over at the Llais stage, you’ll find a variety of arts and literary events, including Radio Cymru’s Talwrn Y Beirdd on Saturday at 14:00 as well as Lafwyll’s Welsh-language comedy on Saturday at 19:00. Head to Llais on Sunday at 19:00 for a talk with BBC’s Lost Boys & Fairies director, Dafydd James.

There’s a variety of activities and musicians at Yurt T, with up-and-coming Welsh bands featured on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Check the Tafwyl website for a full schedule of events or download the Gwyl Tafwyl app.

What else can I do at Tafwyl 2024?

There are plenty of stalls selling crafts and local goods throughout the festival, with a wide variety of street foods and drinks also available, including the popular Cwrw Tafwyl beer.

If you’ve got a child involved with a school production at Tafwyl, you’ll want to check the School Stage schedule to find out when they’re on.

Around the festival, you’ll also find a variety of creative content thanks to the Cardiff and Vale College Art Trail.

Foodies can head to the cooking pavilion to watch live cooking demonstrations, sample traditional Welsh dishes, and learn all about Welsh food from Welsh chefs.

Gwerinle is a new folk music area where visitors can sample some traditional Welsh folk tunes, with performances from local folk musicians.

Check out the Tafwyl website for a full list of what’s on.

Tafwyl will be held at Bute Park from 13 July until 14 July, 2024.
