Gavin and Stacey star and co-creator Ruth Jones has said the show is “definitely over” but also hinted she and James Corden could work together again in the future.

Jones won best female performance in a comedy for her role as Nessa in the show’s finale at Sunday’s TV Bafta awards.

In her acceptance speech, Jones said it was “immense” to win the award and thanked her “dear, talented friend” Corden.

Mr Loverman, Mr Bates vs the Post Office and Baby Reindeer were among the other winners at the awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Jones and Corden created and wrote Gavin and Stacey together, playing Nessa and Smithy, with the first series airing in 2007.

Jones said her and Corden had a “lovely friendship” and hoped their writing relationship continued.

“I often say he’s like my annoying, younger brother and I’m like your very bossy older sister, but it just seems to work,” she explained.

“We have such a good laugh together and we just love being in a room and writing together and I hope that, that’s going to continue because Gavin and Stacey is now finished.

“I can’t really say anything at the moment, but yeah, I’m sure we will come up with something in the future.”

The series officially ended with a grand finale Christmas Day episode last year and became one of the most watched scripted TV shows of the century.

According to official Barb ratings figures, after seven days of catch-up viewing the finale had been seen by 19.11 million people.

Speaking as Nessa on the Today programme on Monday, Jones told listeners there would be no more Gavin and Stacey episodes.

“We called it the finale, though, and I’m not being funny but if you call something the finale, then that’s the end isn’t it.

“You don’t want to see Nessa and Smithy putting the bins out, you don’t want to see that domestic bliss.”

Jones said the whole point of the two’s relationship was the anticipation of “will they wont they” and the “fractiousness between them”.

“It’s definitely over,” she said.

“We are very lucky to have had a 17-year run with it.

“And it is now time to shut the door and let, let those families get on with their lives in private.”
